Academics and Religious Education

Catholic Identity is achieved through various liturgical events.

  • Students attend Mass at least once per week and every school day begins with the entire school community gathering to pray together.

  • School-wide prayer services are held at various times such as the Jesse Tree Service at Christmas time and Holy Thursday service during Lent.

  • Stations of the Cross are part of our Lenten observance.

  • The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is part of our kindergarten curriculum.

  • Spirit pals are young students paired with older students.  Spirit pals meet on a regular basis to perform service work, share stories, or pray.  Each Thursday some of the spirit pals recite the rosary for the sacredness of life.

  • Our Saints are sometimes the forgotten heroes, so we created the S.O.M.body Awards Program.  This program highlights different saints and their feast day each month.  Students are taught about the attributes that makes these Saints special and then if a teacher, or another adult, sees a student displaying one of those characteristics, the student is recognized and awarded during morning prayer.

Our Curriculum is based on the state of Indiana's academic standards.

All of our teachers are fully certified and well prepared to teach the children what they are expected to learn.  It is not unusual to see students creating artwork that exemplifies a history lesson, illustrating a literary concept, using manipulations to enhance their learning of a math concept or moving from center to center in a classroom.  As students graduate from St. Aloysius and move on to secondary school, they are well prepared to meet academic challenges.

"At Saint Aloysius School, we are small enough to nurture each child and big enough to change the world through their collective accomplishments."

Art and Physical Education

Our art, music, and physical education classes are part of a total quality program.  Art students learn of numerous artists, their styles, and "how to" create like artists.  Music classes expose the children to a multitude of skills and experiences such as harmonizing, learning pitch, or understanding rhythm on hand-made drums in the likeness of reggae music.

Physical education class has the children learning about total body health, proper ways to play popular sports, nutrition information, and good sportsmanship.

Sports

Sports available for students in grades 4 through 8 are:

  • Football

  • Basketball

  • Volleyball

  • Soccer

  • Track

  • Cheerleading

Extra-curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities available include:

  • Journalism for Jr. High Students

  • Student Council for grades 6 through 8

  • Boy Scouts

  • Children's Choir

Students are encouraged to participate in these activities for a number of reasons.  Developing good time-management skills is a natural result.  Learning how to work with others toward a common goal has tremendous benefits.  Developing a strong sense of school spirit and pride carries great impact for all.

Community Service

Community service is an important part of St. Aloysius School and in teaching our students the important of social consciousness.  This year, we have conducted a food drive for Community Harvest Food Bank.  Also, different grade levels have visited the Ossian Health Care Center.  We have made blankets for the poor of Appalachia, provided sack lunches for the Rescue Mission, and collected numerous items for Crossroads.  Our students are making a positive difference in our community!
